Dr Ashfaq Khalfan, BCL/LLB (McGill); DPhil (Oxford), is Chair of the Center for International Sustainable Development Law Board, Director of the Sustainability Regulation Observatory, and Distinguished Policy Fellow at LSE Law School. He previously served as Director of the Law and Policy Programme at Amnesty International.

An expert in sustainable development law, human rights, and international accountability frameworks, he has led and advised on legal enforcement of economic, social, and cultural rights, human rights obligations of international financial institutions, corporate accountability, and the integration of human rights into global development agendas. Prior to joining Amnesty International, he directed the Right to Water Programme at the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions, strengthening international standards on water and sanitation rights across multiple jurisdictions. He has also worked with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ), the Canadian Department of Justice, and the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

He has authored and co-authored leading works on sustainable development law, extraterritorial human rights obligations, and global justice. He speaks English, French, and Swahili.
