Professor Michael Mehling, PhD (Helsinki), LLM (Helsinki), LLB (Constance) is Deputy Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (CEEPR) at MIT and a Professor at the University of Strathclyde Law School. His expertise spans climate policy design, energy transitions, carbon pricing, and the intersections of environmental, financial, and trade policy.

For over two decades, he has led research projects for international organisations, governments, and private entities across North America, Europe, and the Global South. He has advised policymakers in more than a dozen countries, provided expert testimony before legislative bodies in the U.S., U.K., and EU, and contributed to climate litigation and arbitration cases.

Professor Mehling has been instrumental in pioneering climate law initiatives. He is a founding board member of the Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI), Ecologic Institute (Washington, D.C.), and the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST). He is also the founding editor of Carbon & Climate Law Review (CCLR).

Currently, he is a Partner at Ecologic Institute (Berlin), an Associate Researcher at the University of Cambridge’s Energy Policy Research Group, and an advisor to key sustainability organisations. A German-American citizen, he speaks multiple languages and has lived in Europe, the U.S., and Latin America.
